What is L-Glutathione?
L-Glutathione is soluble in water, dilute alcohol and dimethylformamide but insoluble in ethanol. Its solid state is generally stable, however, its aqueous solution is easily oxidized when exposed to air.
As an active tripeptide, glutathione consists of three amino acids: glutamic acid (Glu), cysteine (Cys), and glycine (Gly).
Forms of Glutathione
L-glutathione is present in cells and tissues in reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG and glutathione disulfide) forms. Glutathione concentrations in animal cells range from 0.5 to 10 mM.

Functions Of Glutathione
As a major intracellular antioxidant
The excessive free radicals produced by the body’s metabolism will destroy the biofilm and invade the macromolecules of life, thereby accelerating the body’s aging and inducing tumors or atherosclerosis.
Glutathione is pivotal in the body’s biochemical defense system. Its primary physiological function is to get rid of free radicals in the human body. Glutathione is an antioxidant in the body that protects many thiol groups in proteins and enzymes.
As a broad-spectrum antidote
Glutathione can attach to harmful compounds, heavy metal ions or carcinogens entering the human body to help remove them, neutralize and detoxify them.
Raising the level of glutathione in cells is the most effective weapon for boosting the immune system.
As an effective anti-aging and beauty brightener
Glutathione can efficiently slow down cell aging and revive cell regeneration. Additionally, it can hinder skin pigmentation by impacting the tyrosinase activity of skin cells and curbing the creation of melanin.
It can increase or promote the secretion of interleukin (human growth hormone). Interleukins can regulate telomere shortening and prolong cell lifespan, thereby prolonging the human lifespan.
Glutathione is an effective antioxidant that helps protect DNA mitochondria from free radical damage and repairs damaged DNA mitochondria. It helps prolong the cell division cycle and cell lifespan.
Recommend Dosage and Safety of Glutathione
Scientific research suggests that an ideal daily intake of glutathione ranges from 100 to 150 mg. For healthy individuals, 100 mg per day is generally sufficient. However, those with reduced glutathione levels should consult a healthcare professional to determine an appropriate dosage.
As a naturally occurring substance in the human body, glutathione is considered very safe. Studies and food safety tests have shown that daily intakes of up to 1,000 mg—ten times the recommended amount—are well tolerated without adverse effects.
Used in Combination with Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a vital antioxidant that plays a key role in protecting the body against oxidative stress. Due to its ability to reversibly undergo hydrogenation and dehydrogenation, it participates in numerous redox reactions essential for cellular function.
Many enzymes rely on active thiol (-SH) groups to maintain their biological activity. Vitamin C supports these enzymes by preserving their -SH groups in a reduced state. It also plays an important role in regenerating reduced glutathione from its oxidized form.
In addition, vitamin C helps protect other essential vitamins—such as vitamins A, E, and certain B vitamins—from oxidative damage. Therefore, when supplementing with glutathione, combining it with vitamin C can enhance its stability and effectiveness.
